To better understand steroids and those who use them, it is important to consider the various reasons which motivate
people to begin their abuse.

Feelings of inadequacy:
In the highly competitive world of modern sports, athletes often strive to obtain the best possible results from their workouts. Oftentimes, newcomers to this competitve world find themselves behind and unable to compete with those who have spent much of their lives obtaining thier now powerful bodies. These rookies may turn to steroids as a way to accelerate thier progress and "catch up."
Scientific research has also revealed that one's genetic makeup can often reflect thier ability to build muscle mass. People of smaller body types may wish to be able to compete with their larger competition. In order to push thier bodies beyond thier natural limitations, these individuals may resort to steroid abuse.
Solution: More difficult in reality than in theory: People must learn to accept their bodies and the limitations of their genetics. Furthermore, patience must be excercised. One must choose the long, yet more rewarding, path of hard work and dedication. Through a true effort and powerful will, one may become more muscular and athletic than they had ever believed possible, without the negative effects caused by steriods.

Everyone else is using them:
All too often, the brotherhood (or sisterhood) of sporting teams can turn from a positive social and life changing interaction to a negative pool of peer pressure. Many athletes, often younger or less experienced, can be pushed into steroid usage in a group atmosphere. If the strongest athlete is using steroids, it often seems like the best alternative to hard work and training for a weaker athlete who wants to better their body, and as a result, their career.

Solution: It can be said that the bonds between members of a true athletic team can be the strongest bonds one may form in thier life. Positive peer pressure must be created in such an atmosphere; one that denounces the use of steroids. One must truly look at not who is the "biggest" athlete on the team, but who is the best athlete. The discipline that comes with focused determination can often be a defining role in the creation of an player. When looking at professional athletes, it becomes clear, the best are not using steroids. It may be true that some winners have won their respective competitions through steroid use, though these cheaters are always found, and their victories are erased in a shameful, and career ending, embarassment.
