Not all steroid use is bad for the body. When used in moderation, and under the direct supervision of a medical professional who is aware of an individual's health needs, steroids can be advantagous to a person whose body is in health distress.
*Steroids often are injected directly into joints to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout or other inflammatory diseases. They also can be injected into inflamed bursae or around tendons near most joints in the body.
*Some people report relief from osteoarthritis when steroids are injected directly into the inflamed joints.
*Frequent steroid injections, more often than every three or four months, are not recommended because of an increased risk of weakening tissues in the treated area.
*A varient form of steroids, different in exact nature than the steroids used for body building, can be swallowed or inhaled to treat the symptoms of asthma.
*Unfortunately, the need to use steroids for true medical reasons may cause exclusion from athletic competition as well. One must accept that their survival is more important however, and only refuse treatment with steroids if an effective alternative exists.
